1. Overview
AI CarScan ("the app", "we", "us") is a vehicle diagnostics application that connects to your car's OBD-II port via a Bluetooth adapter and optionally uses AI to help interpret that data. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
2. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a unique user identifier, your name (if you consent), and your email address. We use this to create and manage your account.
Vehicle Sensor Data
When you connect an OBD-II adapter, the app reads sensor data from your vehicle (RPM, speed, temperatures, fault codes, etc.) and records your drives on your device. It leaves your device in two cases:
- With every AI question. Each question you send to the AI mechanic automatically carries your vehicle data — you do not attach it yourself: the recording you chose (the current drive or a saved session), the latest sensor readings, trouble codes, freeze frames, inspection readiness and monitor test results, your vehicle identification number (VIN), the vehicle's year, make, model and mileage, and your display units.
- To identify your vehicle. Each time you connect, the app sends the VIN it reads from the car to our server, which forwards it to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vehicle lookup service to get the year, make and model. Our server keeps the result in memory to answer repeat lookups; it is not stored in our database.
Chat Messages
If you use the AI Diagnostics feature, your questions — together with the vehicle data described above and any photos or files you attach — are sent to our servers and forwarded to an AI language model to generate a response. Conversations are stored so you can access your history. The recorded drive log itself is not stored with the conversation (we keep only its size and time span); the rest of the vehicle data sent with a question is stored with that question.
Usage Data
We collect basic usage information to operate the service, enforce usage limits and diagnose problems: app version, subscription tier, how many AI questions and CSV exports you have used, and server request logs (the request path, status and timing, your account identifier and IP address — never the content of your messages).
Billing Information
Subscription purchases are handled by Apple's App Store. The app sends us Apple's signed record of your purchase, which we verify ourselves to set your plan and its renewal date. We store the subscription's Apple original transaction ID, product and environment (production or test) with your account, so one subscription unlocks one CarScan account. If another CarScan account tries to use the same subscription, the app shows it a masked form of your email address (for example j•••@icloud.com) so the person holding the subscription can tell which account has it; they can move the subscription to their account, which returns yours to the free plan. We never see your payment details.

We do not sell your data. We do not use your vehicle data for advertising.

When you use AI Diagnostics, your questions, the vehicle data sent with them (including your VIN) and any attachments are processed by Google. Please review their privacy policy to understand how they handle this data. The VIN lookup sends NHTSA only the VIN.
5. Data Retention
- Conversations are retained until you delete them or close your account.
- Vehicle data sent with your questions is retained as part of the conversation, except the recorded drive log itself, of which we keep only its size and time span.
- Account data is deleted immediately when you delete your account from the Profile screen. Your conversations, messages, name, email, and avatar are permanently removed at that time, along with the link between your account and your Apple subscription.
- Limited tombstone record. After deletion we retain a minimal record consisting of your sign-in provider (Apple or Google), the opaque provider account identifier, your prior subscription tier and its expiry date, and your prior usage counts for AI questions and CSV exports (with their monthly reset dates). We use this only to prevent abuse of the free allowances via repeated account re-creation. A paid plan is not restored from this record: if you sign in again with the same account, it starts on the free plan and your plan comes back when the app re-checks your Apple subscription with us. This record contains no name, email, avatar, conversations, or message content.
- App Store subscriptions are managed by Apple and are not cancelled by deleting your account. To stop billing, cancel your subscription in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
6. Guest Mode
If you use the app in Guest mode, no account is created and nothing is stored on our servers. Your recordings and vehicle data remain on your device. The app may still send the VIN lookup request when you connect; without an account our server refuses it, and the VIN is neither forwarded to NHTSA nor stored. Guest mode does not have access to AI chat features.
7. Children's Privacy
AI CarScan is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data. To exercise these rights or to delete your account, contact us at the email below.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the effective date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
